The final day of the 2024 Olympic Games has now concluded. It has been a rollercoaster fortnight in Paris and there was still plenty of drama to be had on Sunday as Team GB picked up some final medals.

The women’s marathon kicked off today’s action before Great Britain‘s Emily Campbell took bronze in the weightlifting to add to her silver medal in Tokyo. Kerenza Bryson finished in ninth in the women’s modern pentathlon after Kate French was forced to withdraw.

In the cycling, Emma Finucane won her bronze match for a third medal in Paris and British team-mate Jack Carlin crashed out in the men’s keirin final, while the USA topped the final medal table ahead of China after claiming a dramatic last gold in the women’s basketball final. GB ended up with one more medal than they managed in Tokyo three years ago, but claimed eight fewer golds. USA top final medal table despite tying with China for golds

That final dramatic USA triumph means they finished TIED on golds with great Olympic rivals China at the summit of the final medal table with 40 each.

However, the Americans finish well ahead on medals overall, with 44 silvers and 42 bronzes taking them to 126 overall.

China got 27 silvers and 24 bronzes for a final tally of 91.

Japan end up third with 20 golds, with Australia fourth on 18 ahead of hosts France, who had 16.

Team GB end up behind the Netherlands in seventh place in the final standings with 14 golds and 65 medals overall.

A fittingly thrilling end to an unforgettable Olympics!

Team USA have clinched the gold-medal double again at the Bercy Arena, with hosts France thwarted once more in the women’s final - just as they were by the men last night.

Another gripping contest finishes 67-66 to the USA, with Gabby Williams nailing a buzzer-beating shot that initially looks to have forced overtime - until it transpires that she agonisingly just had her foot on the three-point line.

The USA hold on to claim the final gold of these Games, with silver for France.

Australia beat Belgium 85-81 earlier on to claim bronze.

Earlier on we’ve had Denmark win the men’s handball, Serbia claim the men’s water polo and an Italian victory in the women’s volleyball.

Last to start is the women’s basketball final, with France seeking an upset against the USA.

Victory for the US would edge them above China in the final medal table.

As it stands, China have 40 golds to 39 but the States are miles clear in silver (44 to 27) and bronze (42 to 24) counts.

Neah Evans finishes 15th in the women’s omnium after the points race, an improvement on her performances in the opening three round which did not go to plan at all.

The USA take gold with Jennifer Valente the big favourite living up to the tag, that’s her second triumph in Paris.

Emma Finucane secures historic hat-trick of Olympic medals in Paris

Emma Finucane became the first British woman in 60 years to win a hat-trick of medals in a single Olympics on a dramatic final day of the Paris Games.

Finucane emulated Mary Rand from the 1964 Olympics in winning individual sprint bronze to add to her team gold and earlier bronze in the keirin.

But Jack Carlin’s hopes of coming away with a third medal of his own in Paris ended with a horror crash in the penultimate event, the keirin.

Team GB beat Tokyo medal haul

Great Britain have clocked 65 medals in total, beating the 64 they won in Tokyo and making it four Games in a row they’ve won over 60.

Only 14 golds (only!) and they are sixth in the overall standings.

You can certainly make up time at the range though, each athlete needs five hits before they can leave. The French leader, Elodie Clouvel, makes a mess of her first visit and drops to second place.

Turnbull follows Lavreysen around the outside but can’t quite keep pace. He’s in fifth at the bell.

He crashes out on the final bend! The Brit was forced up the track to avoid the falling German and both went down at high speed.

Things have happened quickly for Georgia Bell since she returned to her first love but never quite as quickly as this.

On the final night of athletics here at the Stade de France, the 2008 English Schools champion, who watched the lastOlympic Gamesfrom her sofa having long left track behind, did something extraordinary, shattering the national 1,500m record en route to themost remarkable Olympic bronze.

Bell’s time of 3:52.16 took another four seconds off a personal best that had already shed ten since the start of the year, the 30-year-old chasing home Australia’s Jessica Hull and Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, who broke the Olympic record to run 3:51.29 and take this title for an unprecedented third time on the spin.

At the line, having surged past Ethiopian Diribe Welteji in the final strides, Bell threw her head skywards in shock, seeking answers from the few clouds that hung above the city in which she was born. Her comeback story, which began only in 2022, had yet to reach a ceiling, but this was fantastical stuff.

Caden Cunningham narrowly misses out on gold

Great Britain's Caden Cunningham had to settle for taekwondo Olympic silver after being beaten by Iran's Arian Salimi in the final of the men's +80kg category in Paris.

The 21-year-old from Huddersfield won the first round 6-3 but a snaking head kick from the Iranian in round two paved the way for a comprehensive response that set up a final round decider.

The pair remained neck-and-neck for much of a cagey contest but Salimi pulled away in the final 20 seconds to ensure victory for Iran.

Team GB’s track and field team enjoyed their most successful Olympic Games for 40 years after sealing 10 medals on the final day of athletics at the Stade de France.

After Georgia Bell won a surprise bronze in the 1500metres, both the men’s and women’s 4x400m teams added further bronze medals on Saturday, what was the penultimate day of the 2024 Olympics.

A brilliant race over the last 600m. I thought at one stage Gebrihewet might have stolen it with his burst off the front while the others were in an almighty tangle around that top bend but he didn't have the legs to make the element of surprise count.

I'm looking forward to seeing that last 400 split from Ingebrigtsen.

Marco Arop is such a championship performer and he very nearly pulls it off again, but Wanyonyi does brilliantly to hold him off.

The question all year, when Sedjati had been running those lightning quick times on the circuit, had been of whether he could do it through the rounds. He's still gone sub 1:42 for the bronze there so let's not get carried away, but telling that he's the only man in the top four not to run a personal best. He needed one to win gold.
